Bellambi has a beach called Bellambi Beach, which is on the Wollongong to Thirroul Bike Track. Bellambi lies on the flat northern Illawarra coastal plain, with views of the Broker's Nose to the west (which is 440 metres high), Bellambi Beach and Bellambi Lagoon to the east, and both Bellambi Harbour (formerly known as Port Bellambi) and Bellambi Point to the south. A jetty was built at Bellambi Bay in 1887, the Bellambi Mines Rescue Station was established in 1927 while the Bellambi Public School was opened in 1956. Bellambi Point incorporates Bellambi Lagoon Reserve, a protected area mostly forested in swamp oaks, coastal sclerophyll and saltmarsh. Bellambi Lake separates the suburb from its neighbour, Corrimal. It was found that a fair number of aboriginal people lived in the vicinity of Bellambi Point, as well as on the northern part of Towradgi Creek, and the sand banks close to Bellambi Lake. In 2012, Bellambi Point was declared an official Aboriginal Place by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.
